Unhappy Are you an atheist?

I grew up believing in god, but have since come to the realization that he does not exist.

Agnostic... I believe neither in the presence of a deity nor the absence of a deity.

More or less. Grew up in a Christian family and went through a Christian school system. My dad almost became a clergyman but didn't because he had some serious issues with the institution. He was a man of deep faith and a Christian theologian of some note. It didn't stick with me. The older I get the less faith I have that there's anything beyond this plane.

I have also come to the realization that I've made a serious reply on what appears to be a Boalg troll thread.

Troll or not, it's an interesting topic. I think we need more polling options.

Musicians seem to be more varied in their beliefs than other demographics

Hm, I consider myself agnostic, but defined as a belief that it is not (yet) possible to determine if there is a deity or not.

SJ's phrasing makes my head explode.

It's intentional. I live in the "Bible Belt". It's easier to confuse the locals than to explain myself

Yep.

I'll play though.

I grew up, via family coercion, as a southern baptist (after being christened a methodist). As I hit my tween years, I viewed god like santa claus. The existence of both seemed equally plausible. This is when I entered my agnostic phase. As a young adult (early 20s), I met a young woman who was a devout catholic. I was intrigued, and ultimately went through catechism classes, and converted. I was in the Navy at this time and went to mass 5 - 7 days a week. I eventually drifted away. My wife was a practicing buddhist when I met her 20+ years ago. The philosophy resonated with me. It still does sans the organized religion side of it. My wife is a senior leader. I support her but don't actively participate. Since there is no deity in buddhism, and I still identify philosophically, I guess I would say I'm an atheist.

In the end, I don't know. I used to care about this but don't now. I know that I will ultimately die. I will either find out at that time or I won't. It's not important to me in the here and now. Folks that are convinced they are right about what happens when you die concern me. They don't know. You don't know. I don't know. All religions/faiths/beliefs are all equally plausible to me.

there may or may not be a god, or many gods. for me in my day to day life it doesn't much matter. used to believe, pray, attend church, etc. until a few things happened that completely went against the beliefs i had been taught about who/what god is and does. since then, i live by the same general morals and such, but more because they're a good way to live life rather than because god wants me to.

I 100% believe in God.

I have absolutely no faith in the way mankind chooses to acknowledge or worship that entity.

I have always been agnostic, and grow more doubtful of there being a God as I get older.

Just have a look around. Everything is so much more easily explained and understood if there isn't one.

Well that settles it, the majority of responses on an internet forum are atheists/agnostic so there is no God.

Next!

I'll bite.

I was confirmed lutheran. Haven't been back for service since confirmation. I just can't imagine that after thousands of years and so many different societies being SURE they are right about god or gods....that suddenly the current one has it right. I don't think there is any way to know. I'll find out when I'm done here and I'm pretty sure it's nothing any human has been able to conjure up in their imagination.

I'd say I'm pretty solidly agnostic.

Ditto, except change Catholic to Anglican (Roman Catholic lite: same religion, half the guilt).

What I have noticed in the last 20 years is increased polarization with respect to religion (Christianity specifically). The moderate sects seem to be bleeding people who seem to either gravitate to the atheist/agnostic side of the spectrum or to the evangelical sects. There doesn't seem to be much in between.

I believe that a higher being or beings presented it/themselves in different ways to different cultures. I know there is more then what I see but as far as what box to put it in I can not say.

Big golden rule person.

I guess I'm an atheist per definition, though I'd rather not label myself as one (I might just as well call myself an aunicornist). I have no faith whatsoever, but I can't with good conscience bring myself to deny the existence of any deity transcending the physical world, but up until the point where we can prove the existence of such a deity, I might as well live my life as if it doesn't.

I feel confident that, if such a deity should exist, it won't be anything like the deities described in the various religious texts of the world, though.

I think the same thing - for me it's simply because there is no possible way humans can know what any such diety is. We have spent history imagining up gods and religions to help guide the way that we live, give us a sense of meaning and a sense of belonging. The gods we have created are simply that of our imagination - the likely hood of any human actually accurately guessing the correct form of a potential diety is pretty slim in my opinion.
