Angry How do I start a website? I have no idea what I'm doing.

I need a simple, but professional looking website. I'm gonna need a way to play mp3's from it as well.

Where do I start? Domain? Host? What's up with web design? Are there templates I can use or something? Help a troll out, won't ya?

I started by finding a good friend who knew what he was doing and that understood my needs.

Simple to use & dirt cheap.
Also a cheap way to get domain names.

May look like crap but it works and it's cheap.
How their site looks has no bearing on how yours looks.
They have templates for designing pages or you can do your own HTML freehand. (Or whatever code you like to do websites in.) You upload pics, music and junk just like you would upload a pic here in the file attachments or through FTP.

I use godaddy.

Also Wordpress. It's pretty easy to use after you figure it out. Zachoff on HCBF (and sometimes here) helped me out getting it up and running.

How much should I pay for domain, hosting, site building/templates? Doing HTML by hand is out of the question.

Are you happy with GoDaddy? Zachoff is supposed to be my HCBFBFF, but I haven't heard from him in a while.

That's a word press site, yeah? And what is the site builder/designer? The link took me to a German website.

My site is also a Wordpress site with a custom template. I refuse to let an opportunity go by without saying Wordpress is the best way to do things at the moment.

Register your domain name.
Get a host.
Install Wordpress as your content management system.
Tweak until you rule the world.

I've been using SurpassHosting and SurpassDomains for my domain/hosting needs for the past 8 years or so. Excellent customer support, tons of features, great rates, etc. I really can't say enough about them. If you decide to go with someone else (don't do this), make sure whoever you use has CPanel on their shared bandwidth plans. CPanel will make your life much, much easier.

As for making a site to host stuff on, you have a pretty large range of options. Depends how much functionality you need, how much room for expansion you're looking for, whether you want users to be able to sign up or just have it be a regular read-only site, etc. etc. You can use this website to test all sorts of different blogs, galleries, and CMS's and see what suits your fancy.

The more popular the CMS is, the more templates you'll be able to find. Each will require SOME amount of tweaking though, so you're either gonna have to suck it up and do a minimal amount of HTML and graphics work, pay someone to do it for you, or have a generic looking site.

Wordpress is by far my most favorite site building tool. It's technically a blog, but can be used in a wide variety of ways. If you want something more robust, Joomla will likely fit the bill. Joomla is much more difficult to get started on since there are so many options (and you're a noob), not to mention its admin interface kinda sucks, but it's pretty cool.

So I could register a domain and get a host with GoDaddy and use WordPress to build the site?

Yes.

To the extent you can tweak existing templates to accomplish your goal you're done. To the extent you need some additional design, you'll have to pay someone to design your templates. Once you have the templates in place, managing the content, adding, removing, editing, etc. is aseasy as making posts in this forum.

I don't know. I had to fill out a "ticket" on a different looking website and they said they would get back to me.
