Why are you wearing your beach shoes in the house with jeans?
That's not me. I stole someone else's picture.

Thought about starting a new thread but figured it would likely fit in with this one.

I wear jeans, docs, and flannel shirts (in cold weather) and various button-up (non-dressy) shirts (in warm weather). I rarely tuck my shirt in. I wouldn't say I'm a slob but certainly don't dress classy. The classes I teach often have me in situations whereby I am working with tools and can get dirty.

Now that I've applied for the dean's job, I know that my dress will have to change if I actually land the job. My question (other than that's what's expected) is why? I'm not opposed to dressing nicely and will gladly throw on dressier clothes for social occasions when warranted. I've never understood the idea that one must necessarily dress a certain way to accomplish a job...especially in an office role.

Why? Really nothing more than social convention. In reality, you are (constantly and subliminally) being judged by how you look at all times. The judgments are contextually based, so even if you don't change anything about how you look, if you find yourself in a different setting, others may judge you differently based on the change in setting alone.

I get that. You're also judged on how you speak and how you act. It just seems odd to me when it comes down to getting a job done.

If I get the new position, I will dress for the job.

Yup. I agree, but you have to dress for the job. It's other people's expectations and perceptions you are dressing up or down to.

BTW, good luck with getting the job. Hope it happens for you.

#1 when do we get to see the suit KK?
#2 in the random thoughts thread (pre-paring), ThudMaker urged me not to wear my (then) new shoes with jeans. I said I wouldn't likely wear them with jeans, but that people do and they look great. I promised a picture at some point. Here is a recently posted one that I think shows off how well they can look with jeans.

I like those. What are they?

Just bought another sport coat. I hated them for a long time, now I want 20.

On the positive side, Brooks Brothers standard coat (Madison) had long been a real boxy cut. The current iteration is trimmer with much more natural shoulders. Definitely well within the classic proportions, but it doesn't look like a structured sack anymore.

And SDM dresses like a hobo.

My kids could probably have that thing unintentionally destroyed in minutes

On a side note, Allen Edmonds makes some damn fine shoes.

In fairness, he's not alone. The second I walk into the door at home I'm in a t-shirt and pajama bottoms. Even when people come over I'm in them, fair warning to anyone here. LSM's wife was caught pretty off guard by my slumming attire the first time they ever came over.

I'm right there with you. Though usually I'm at least wearing something a step over my flannel pants when someone else is over.

I have no shame, but I really doubt that's a surprise to anyone.

In the infamous "t3ch is fat" thread-- err, I mean, the "M13/Griffey" thread, I was wearing my normal house-attire and everyone made fun of the pajama pant design.

Good deal. It's on their website too. That knocks an Abboud or Lauren suit down to about $300 each.

Sorry, but I have never liked the look of any wingtip with jeans. For some reason I associate wingtips with a more formal dressed look, and with jeans they remind me of the old Italian guys I used to see sitting in their driveway in an aluminum lawnchair, wearing wingtips, white socks, plaid shorts, and a wifebeater. They'd usually be drinking a Schlitz and listening to the Mets game...

Fair point. I don't wear them with jeans either. I have other images come to mind, but I wear a dark brown calfskin chukka with tailored denim. If I'm wearing "dad jeans," I'm probably also wearing skate shoes.

I kinda like this tie. I wish it wasn't pleated but even with that, it's a nice design.

Dammit... now my mind is on ties... even though I only really ever wear them for weddings, funerals, and interviews

I like some of Vitaliano Pancaldi's designs.
