Planting evidence should lead to jail time.
Should.

He'll probably get 3 weeks of paid leave.

I mean ultimately he was trying to imprison a poor and destroy his life, so he was technically doing the right thing.

It would be interesting to see that community's response to the incident had she been a young black male. Something tells me there wouldn't be as much wreath laying or somber lakeside vigils taking place until "all the facts" were brought to bear.

If cops in the Twin Cities shot another young black male in such a short time span, we'd have riots. No question. There were minor riots when Jamar Clark was shot in late 2015, although there wasn't much violent protest when the Castille shooting happened outside of a few incidents. The majority white, police-supporting community would be condemning the violence and doing the "wait until all the facts come out" thing of course. There is that going on here, but not nearly as much.

EDIT: Strike that last sentence. After browsing local news stories and sources, the online comments show just as much police backing as they have after the past few shootings.

Just as a counterpoint, 9 news is doing a piece on the primary officers involved with the Aurora Theater Shooting. It's the 5 year anniversary.

My singer is one of the 8 interviewed.

WARNING: You might see l a little bit of a different side to police officers.

Looks like they did a multi part series on this.

I'll just leave this here.

I will admit that police officers seem to have better luck in arbitration than your average non-LEO employee (it definitely shouldn't be that way, but it is), but I don't have a problem with this at all. Grievance arbitration is a vital process that emanates from collective bargaining agreements and it's absolutely essential in lessening (but far from eliminating) the tremendous power imbalance between employers and employees. In cases of discipline and discharge, it's important because it doesn't allow the employer to act as judge, jury and executioner.

That article cherry picked a few egregious cases where, at least at first glance, the reinstated grievants shouldn't be police officers any longer. However, there's nothing to suggest that those cases are emblematic of the entire body of reinstatements.

Just from my own experience, I've seen plenty of wrongful terminations where the employee was unable to win his/her job back. In fact, one just happened two weeks ago. A corrections officer was wrongfully fired and it went in front of an arbitrator. The arbitrator, for whatever reason, refused to believe the grievant's story, instead relying on the employer's deeply flawed and biased investigation (despite the lack of evidence). The grievance was denied and the poor guy is out of a job.

Unions don't make it impossible (or even that hard) to fire bad employees - bad employers do. When a poor employee wins reinstatement, it's typically because the employer screwed up royally and flagrantly violated the labor agreement. What's the union supposed to do? If you sign a contract with someone and they wantonly break said contract, are you supposed to just say 'oh well'?

Whenever I see a police chief or other sort of manager/executive/apparatchik decry the union's thwarting their attempts at disciplinary action, I know it's because that agency/department didn't do its job. It's not hard. Don't blame the union because you're inept.
