I'm looking for an Ovation Magnum I or II. If anyone knows where one can be had, please let me know.

There's one in the classifieds at The DudePit (http://www.vintagebass.com/thedudepit/).

I've got my eye on the Gbase one and one on Ebay..... I think that one on the Dudepit's been sold:(
I've missed out on more than one in the last couple months, it's getting a bit exasperating. Was a day late on a very nice one last week....tried i t out in the store, thought it over for a couple days, went back with cash in hand, but it had gone the day before.

I've seen a couple popping up in Spain and other European countries but the prices are insane compared to the US market prices.

They sound great. The neck pickup is a total "sub". The bridge pickup is like a hot Jazz.
I prefer the later body style, but I'd love to get my hands on one.

Wishnevsky's finest hour. :cool:Nah - the bridge is intonatable without having to slide the whole thing around, and the pickups (plural) don't say "Select" on them.

That didn't stop Bob from buying identical basses. Try harder!
Glad to hear you found one! I will be able to sleep tonight. :D

actually, the bridge PU reminds me more of a Rickenbacker than a jazz.
The built-in lever-activated foam mute is great too.
This is a very unconventionally-designed bass, but when you actually look at some of the details, it's very well thought-out-- the neck PU is actually four separate coils, one for each string, while the neck has graphite rods running the length of it. I got the Magnum II, which has the three-band preamp, which I actually really like; it sounds very analoggy. Everything's dead-quiet, too-- no RF noise that I can identify, even while holding it right beneath a fluorescent light which I know to be a nasty noise goblin.
Many people who own these seem to gripe about neck-dive, but I have not noticed it.
I shall scare up some pix probably tomorrow.

Hmmmm, perhaps after getting a proper amp, I should be on the lookout for one of these.

it's a thought, but bear in mind that Ovation only made these for a few years, and didn't make all that many of them.
They're also kind of a cult item.

I know, but right now, a good amp takes precedence.
If I wait long enough, I'm sure one will pop up eventually.
