...swapped into a Geddy J?
http://www.warmoth.com/bass/images/necks/fretboard_3.jpg
I'm thinking about getting a 24 "fret" fretless J-neck off Warmoth. Maple with ebony fretboard.
Either that or the 21-fret option:
http://www.warmoth.com/bass/images/necks/fretboard_2.jpg
Or I could just be sane and boring with a 20 fret as per the poll.
Whaddaya think?

I'm going to say no. I think it'll be one of those things that the bass will look different, but it'll be hard to spot exactly why.

But I want to learn to play and hear fretless without buying and transporting a whole other bass. :(

I mean, "No, Zamfir, it won't look goofy. People may care about looks until you rip them apart with your mad-tasty chops!"
Do it. :D

20 or 21. You won't be able to reach much more than that on a standard J body anyway.

what is a fretted "fretless"?

What I mean is a completely fretless neck. It's just that Warmoth measures the length by the fret (http://www.warmoth.com/bass/necks/necks.cfm?fuseaction=include_fretboard).
Les Izzmor- You know, that SX is actually quite tempting.
How do those sound anyway, with stock pus?

If it were not fretless I'd say: Because it will get in the way while slapping.

Unless you pull a Manring and reach over the top, or stretch around the bottom, sans thumb-to-brace.

They claim it simply extends over the pickguard and will fit on a standard Fender with no modification.
But I still worry if there will be too much thickness to the pickguard or if I'll run into the neck pickup...I don't *think* the latter is an issue (the Geddy has the bridge pickup moved farther towards the bridge, IIRC, but the neck pup is where it should be...), but hard to be sure.
I'm just trying to imagine the extra ebony-ness that far into the pickguard. :D
Edit: if I need to slap...on goes the old neck.

I forgot to mention -- I also have a huge curiosity to see what the Geddy sounds like as a fretless. So there. :P

one, rather large caution about that 24 fret extension- there is NOTHING supporting that long board at the end. So, it is highly probable, not possible but porbable, that it will warp.
If it warps on a fretless, it is much more of a problem then on fretted. On fretless, lower actions are more typical and it can't be fixed by levelling the frets.

I can't think of anything that would cause you a problem. I'm sure Warmoth has done this before, so as long as there aren't any other mods to the bass, it should work fine. :2c:

if you go with the long extension, make sure the cantilevered part of the fretboard with fit and not interfere with the neck pickup...

along as you have room for the extra frets before the front pickup, I dont see a problem.
