how the hell do you get the stink of cigarettes out of an instrument? surely, with all of the gigging in smoky bars that you cats have done in your lifetime, you've figured out a way to get that nasty smell out of your axe.

what is it?!

Send it to me for a period of one year. When I return it, it'll not smell like smoke.

The thing I do is take it out of the case, and put it on a stand in the middle of a room. It'll take a day or so, but it'll air out. Funny how 6 hours in a smoke filled bar will make an instrument stink for 24 hours.

They air out on their own after a while. A month or so after being retired from heavy gigging (or since the Mass smoking ban took effect on the Sadie) all the smoke smell was gone.

A. Live with the smell
B. keep it on a stand when you come home
C. nothing. I have an 81 pBass that still smells, and so does the case

1. boil a huge pot of water

2. insert stinking gear (amps, basses, etc.) into the boiling water for a minimum of 45 seconds

3. retrieve said gear from the aforementioned boiling water with your teeth to ensure a good grasp

4. enjoy the destinkified gear :D:D

(ok, so just let it sit in the open)
:D

Just like they said, leaving it on a stand for a while should help. I bought an 83 Fender Strat Elite a couple of years ago at the Arlington Guitar Show from a guy that was walking around in there with it. Long story short, I loved the guitar, but the case(and to a lesser degree the guitar itself too) stunk like cigarettes, cat, and ass[NOT a good combination!! LOL! :smack: ) I ended up bringing it home and leaving the guitar on a stand for about a week(though I thoroughly cleaned it first) and first put apple wedges in the case for about 3 days, followed by orange slices(in a shallow pan) followed by a steady dousing of Febreeze odor absorbing spray for the next 2 weeks daily. Also left it open after all this in the sun each day for about a week. Happy to say that neither stink the funk anymore(though I do plan to by a nicer new case for the guitar soon{not due to smell anymore though at least);) :D

good stuff here, and this brings up the question of lemon oil on a fretboard, or orange oil as well as what brand of guitar polish to try. All these things help. but they may ultimately mask/trap the stench unless aired out properly

I leave Silica packs in all my cases when in storage. As far as the smell, all you can do is clean the instrument from top to bottom, maybe use a some Lemon pledge if the finish is in good shape. And as stated in the above posts, Leave it sit in the stand for a few weeks and let it air out.:)

Hell, man, I've even had cords that smell. It somehow gets into the rubber insulation. :smack:
