View Full Version : Retolexing A Cab.....

I know that C7 and a couple others have experience in retolexing speaker cabs. The Peavey I got from MLW is in dire need of new tolex. (Or maybe Squirrel fur..... :D ) I'm debating between doing it myself or taking it to somebody that knows what they're doing. Any tips you guys can give out if I decide to do it myself? What do I need to get the old tolex off? How difficult is it to do this? Would snakeskin tolex look cheesey?

I once helped a friend do a Marshall cab , it was tough , there is a art to it ,all the right cuts in the right place , I think the glue is very important as well . But with so many cool colors to choose from it would be kick ass .

Having done it a few times, I actually recommend the bedliner. It's a time consuming pain in the ass to not only rip off the old tolex, but to cut, fit, and glue the new stuff. Also, unless you have a table that's waist high and big enough to move the cab around on, you're going to cause yourself some serious lower back strain.
To get the old Tolex off, take a shovel handle, the kind with the T-handle (and without the shovel end), peel off an 8 inch tag of tolex, wrap it around the handle, and twist, rolling the tolex onto the handle. They glue that shit on there GOOD.
You'll also need to use some industrial strength stripper to get all the glue off, so the bedliner stuff will bond well.
If you're set on Tolex, Parts Express has it for cheap, and they have the ratfur stuff really cheap also. I've always used wood glue for the rat fur, but contact cement will work better for Tolex.

Go ask over on TB, there's a source for it that will ship it to you in 1 gallon buckets and you can roll it on. I just don't know what it is.

Actually, I've found several places.
I'll probably do as Mrs. tone suggested and check the local Auto Parts places first though.

A cab from ML that needs retolexing? Never.
:P :D
Seriously though, retolexing is a pain in the ass and if I had it to do over again, I would definitely go with the bedliner stuff.

 hahahafuckyou
actually, both of those cabs came to me in almost that exact condition. i really didn't do much more damage to them. so if you're looking for a scapegoat, go yell at jmb7183 on talkbass.

Retolexing is tedious work, but the end result is classier than rat fur or bedliner. I've done the bedliner on some LS mains. It looks nice, but next to marshalls and mesa guitard amps with tolex, the bedliner and fur looks cheap on bass amps. You'll want a wide and stiff putty knife to get old tolex off. You will need a very sharp carpet knife to cut the tolex. You can use a power sander to remove excess adhesive and get rid of ridges. You don't need contact cement, just a nice day (or proper ventilation) and 3M spray adhesive. Spray on the cabinet and the tolex, let sit for a few seconds and lay it on. Your call. The bed liner is certainly a step up from rat fur.

Eh screw that....I say cover it in spikes. :) Perhaps VW, will do some chainmail for you too. I bet that'd look cool, well once you could get it to stay put.

Personally, I like rat fur but I figured this might be simpler.
Of course, I could always call around and see how much it would cost to pay somebody to do it for me....
