Let's see who really gets the love on this board. I'm not considering model just brand.

I'm sure the V8 will get a mention, so Trace.

Ashdown for me.

As much as I LOVE old SVTs, I think Genz Benz makes the most versatile amps on the market. I've never had a single issue with mine, it consistantly sounds great, and when other bass players hear it, they drool. Time the Enchanter liked mine so much, he bough his own! :D

Hartke...

:D

Of those... I voted GK. Loud, light, the tone of my bass... only heavier.

(Eden, Aguilar, Mesa/Boogie, Peavey, Carvin, Marshall...etc?)

If I could have any amp I wanted and had to pick just one it would be Walter Woods.

But I'd try a Genz-Benz first...

I have never played a Walter Woods. Or a Glockenklang, but I hear good things about them.

I like the Trace I use at the rehearsal studio.
I despise the SWR I use there.
I have been happy with Ampegs I owned in the past
I always liked the GK heads I played thru and my GK MB150 is a gem
Ashdowns are OK in my book...
I started with Fender heads but have no idea what they are like these days.

In the meantime, I am pretty fucking happy with my GB...

so I voted for that.

Other.

I had a Mesa walkabout at home for an evening. Noisy fan and loud pop on/off. Sounded good but couldn't hardly drive it without speaker farting. The TF kicked its ass.

Hard to argue with Ampeg as the king for rock, prog, funk, what have ya. From the old fliptops all the way through to the newer hybrid stuff, it rocks, and you can get a killer sound even if your playing doesn't quite deserve it. :D

Plenty of great stuff elsewhere, though. Aggie and the newer Trace stuff intrigue me. But I have to admit that since I'm not gigging anymore, I've put more energy into finding interesting direct setups than hashing out which 300-watt, 500-lb. paperweight I want to show off in my already-cramped back room. :2c:

In that case, a custom-built ultra badass hyperbomb hybrid amp. Why go mundane if you've got fat staxxx?

There is no one amp that is king of kings. That's why there's so many great amp makers out there, each with their own flavor.

You've stated that your ideal tone is Ashdown. You will never be satisfied with anything less, so it's best to save up the $$$ and get what you really want.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree. At the price I paid on the Musicians Friend closeout, I pretty much stole it. Love it.

Nah.... This isn't a tell me what I want thread.
This is just a curiosity to see what everybody likes ampwise.
It's not nearly as even as I thought it would be.

Oh - bar none, cost no object what you would get if you could have anything?

Let's see.

1. Trace V8.
2. There is no #2.

This isn't my first preference....(well maybe the head is ;) ) but it is undeniably the king of bass amps. It's the benchmark by which others are judged and by far the 1st choice backline for touring pros.

http://www.shorefirerecording.com/images/SVT.jpg

In its own way its as iconic as a P bass and the fact that it is still the standard after being around for 35+ years is amazing.

If I had all the dough in the world though, I'd check into the new Hiwatt 400 through some Bergie NV cabs.

This gets my vote as well!! :D

As far as brands, Trace is still my favorite.

Jugghaid
10-26-2006, 11:22 AM
See, for me it's still the all tube Trace amps for most stuff. But it's hard to beat a vintage SVT for that meaty rock tone. the Aguilar DB750 is phenomenal as well. So are the GB amps for hybrids. Glockenklang is the shit for pure clear tone.

I voted "other" because it really depends on the sound I want at the time.

My overall favorite is still the Trace V4, V6, V8 line, but not for EVERYTHING.

Oi, that might change my answer. What about roadies?

Until I've got some monkeys carrying my shit I'll be just fine with any GK from the artist series.

Okay. My choice for the King of Kings amplifier is "whatever Low Tone wants but doesn't have!" Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! :evil2:

Seriously though, I haven't found it yet. I've played through many nice amplifiers but just like basses I've never found one that was truly "it."

When MF had the closeout deal on the 600, they became quite the rage.
Now everybody wants one and can't get them.

I dunno, as far as I'm concerned nothing beats an old SVT.

That being said, there are some really wicked bass amps out there now, including some that aren't quite on the market yet......;) Great cabs around too these days.
