View Full Version : Ever have the feeling "I should be there on stage!"

I do, and I had it stronger than ever this evening. :smack:

I saw this semi-pro band play with a click-track and bass coming from a laptop. The band is reformed after a 5 year hiatus, and the original bass player doesn't want to play on stage anymore.

They dissapointed a bit. Of course, the expectations were high as they played in the place that used to be their home base... but I also think playing with a metronome took away the much needed spontaneity for their groovy style. Everything was ON the beat, you want to play right after the beat to get some heads bobbing.

I spoke with the band leader afterwards. They are not looking for a bassist right now, maybe later... *end of conversation* I'd love to play for them as they got some fame and national acknowledgement for playing with this Hip-Hop group I've been a fan of since my 13th. They gig with this group on an occasional basis.

So yeah... I'm still shooting him an e-mail with my info... you never know, right?

So, anybody familiar with this feeling? :dunno:

I should have had Nikki Sixx's gig.

I get it a lot - in fact it makes watching some band terrible for me. Not so much for the bass playing, but i do like to be on stage with a crowd that eating it up and loving it. best feeling ever.

WHat ever happened to Urban Dance Squad ?

They are reunited as well. UDS played some festivals this summer. I guess to support their new "Best of.." album.
There are no plans for new recodings though.

I almost killed myself stage diving at one of their shows in early 90s.
The singer had me sit backstage and gave me a beer.
Good memories. :D

Pretty much anytime I see live music, I get that feeling.

Yeah, I get the feeling for a lot of bands. Especially bands that are stretching out, or for Dead cover bands. I find myself playing bass very subtlely with my fingers as I'm watching the band. I also find that I'm usually listening to my own bassline in my head and not the guy playing.

I tend not to get that feeling anymore. I don't like being in front of people so much nowadays, I prefer sitting back and not being seen/heard.

For me it really doesn't have to do with being on stage. I could give a shit if I'm on stage or not. It just feel the rush of inspiration when listening to certain bands and wish I was playing with them.

Names, Haico. We need names.

(You can still come and play bass in I.N.R.I. ;) )

Cool. used to listen to a lot of O.P. in my younger years...

"Ik zat in tram 5 en m'n lul stond stijf..." Fucking classics man...

Next week they are playing together. BJ could really benefit from a bassplayer, like moi... ugh.

I get that every time I see a local band play

Which is why I don't tend to watch many local bands

If a band is boring, I find my mind wandering in this direction. If not, I can forgive a lot of musical sins.

EDIT: I also find myself doing this with solo acts: "that guy really needs a band to bring out the best in these songs..."

The last time I had that feeling was watching a local jazz-fusion trio playing (great players & friends)...the lineup - guitar, keys, and drums (the keys guy playing left hand bass)...I just though I could make it even a little more exciting & free him up. :evil2:

I get that all the time when I see bands; I find myself thinking "There is no reason I could not do that".

Then I remind myself that techincal ability is only about 1/100th of all the elements it takes to make a band work and I have a renewed respect for just about any band that manages to keep their act together.

Yeah - it happened last time I saw the Flecktones.

I figure I shouldn't be playing bass, though. I'm thinking about auditioning for triangle or tambourine or something.
