ok, so i think i've got it narrowed down. at least for the moment. until i decide to un-narrow it.

I'd go with the SX SBJ-62 but just because I haven't heard very good things about the Douglas line. It seems the SX and Brice instruments are far better.

thinking into the future, i like the MM/J pickup combination a little better for future upgrades...

Well, if you're going to hotrod it, then I say go for the Douglas. If you get it and it sucks really bad you can always return it.

Word of warning on the SX 5 strings: make sure you buy some 5 string replacement pickups, and be prepared to router the hole to make 'em fit.
If you remember, mine came with pickups designed for a 4 string.:smack: They weren't wide enough to pick up the B and G strings, in fact, the end poles on either side were precisely in between the E and B, and D and G strings. You can even see what I'm talking about in the pic you posted. The B had no volume, and the G had this funky reverb sound to it. I had to carve a good 1/4" out of EACH SIDE of the pickup holes, and widen the notches for the mounting flanges on the MIM Fender pickups I put in it.
That's been my only bitch. I absolutely love this bass now...

I was going to mention C7s sx as well. The way he has it set up, it plays nice.
Also, look into the yamaha rbx 375. You wont belive how good of a modern tone that bass has. Can be had new at GC for $300 (and less;)) and it comes in black!

what the hell kind of salesman starts a deal then splits for 2 weeks? he obviously doesn't want it sold too badly :D:D
I'd go with Rondo, but I'd rather have a 5-string Brice than an SX. From the reviews I've been able to piece together, the Brice's have a tighter B-string.
This one, for instance

Matt, forget the rondo crap, really, dude. Buy jasons spector. It will give you a better idea of a 5er than the craptastic rondos which you will have to rout, modify, adjust, set up etc. The spector will sound "modern" and has already been set up, etc...

I'll second this, because it will give you an instrument you won't second guess whether or not you're happy with it, you'll be able to resell it if you're just not happy with it, and it will have a 35" scale so the B string will feel really good. I strung my SX EADGC because the B string was floppy.

The top horn on my Warwick isn't for compensation - it's just part of the stage act. It does require a volunteer from the audience, though...
What? It holds up my bass so I can dance with a lady for a while. What'd you think I meant?
