View Full Version : So What's The Difference Between Ground & Lift?

I see on a lot of amps that there are switches for ground and lift. On the Peavey Firebass, it says Gound/Ground Lift. What's the difference and how do I know which one to use?

Ground lift disconnects the amp chassis ground (or 'earth') from the audio signal ground. It's used to counteract ground loops

if your bass shocks you, flip the switch the other way.

amps should be grounded, but, if for some reason, you're getting some hiss or something, lift the ground.

+1

Lift only in case of hum, 'n stuff.

Well, a ground loop will generally manifest itself as a nasty 60Hz hum. So if you're getting that, and it just won't go away, even after trying different basses and cables, try flicking the switch to 'lift'
