Me and the old ball and chain will probably stop living in sin this coming year. I imagine I will pop the question sometime this spring or early summer. My question is this- I want to pick out a ring with sapphires in it (my birthstone). Would you object/dislike/not want an engagement ring with sapphire as it's main or accent stones? What sayeth ye?
Here are some examples:

She has wanted a ring with our birthstones for a while now, hers is the perridot. When I asked her why she said she wants to have a symbol of me on her at all times, I figured this would cover it.

She does. Is it your preference because it is different (unique) or you just don't like diamonds?

Yes to both. Which suits me fine, I hate diamonds too.
I think it's awesome. Not sure if you care about trends or not, but the sapphire engagement rings are really popular right now because of the Prince and his fiance...
That wouldn't bother me but it would bother some people.
I love the 3rd one.

You could play it safe and have a diamond as the main stone with sapphires as the accent stones, like in the last ones.

This was gonna be my idea. The last two are way nicer looking than the first few anyways.

i love sapphires (they are my birthstone too, but i really like them anyways) and i wouldn't have objected. i'm not a huge diamond fan, so my ring has a diamond, but also some really fun scrollwork/filligree (or whatever it is called) that is honestly more interesting than a clear shiny piece of stone to me anyway. i would however lean like you are to having the sapphires be accents instead of the main stone. i think they make a fantastic accent but sometimes are too dark to be the main stone if you are going for a large centre stone look.

It's the safest move. I'm personally too conservative for that style (platinum + diamond for my tastes), but since she asked for your birthstone, I like the concept and suspect she will too.

My wife would have been disappointed had I presented her with an engagement ring. She thinks they're a waste of money, and I agree. :2c:

BTW, I'd be careful since this won't be exactly what she said she wanted ("a ring with our birthstone"). I know you said she wanted a symbol of you, but I'd be damn sure what she really wants isn't a symbol of you both.

My Mum's engagement ring is a sapphire with four small diamonds around it and it's beautiful. My own preference was for a solitaire diamond but if you know she wants something with your birthstone in, this seems perfect. I like the fourth one you posted. The first three are way OTT for me; too ostentatious.

Diamonds are some of the worst in fueling civil wars as well as horrible labor conditions. Maybe it's/they're improving in recent years, but de Beers has a very long record of controlling most diamond distribution for decades and not caring if their sources included not just apartheid South Africa but (former but long-standing) civil conflict zones like Angola and Sierra Leone...
There was a Washington Post series on the diamond trade and international conflict zones a few (maybe several?) years back.

My wife picked out the ring she wanted and then told me to go get it.

She is a bit of a romantic, my gut is she would rather me suprise her. I like the idea of designing it myself, using my birthstone as accents, I am 99% sure that's what I will do. She loves sapphires (has commented several times how much she loves my birthstone) and white gold/platinum. I think for 5-10k I can get one done, with a 1-2 k solitare and a couple of sapphires. We have a local jewler who is excellent, and, I play golf with him so he'll hook me up.
One of my closest friends just went through a similar scenario with his GF, and, did exactly what I am considering (sans the sapphires) and my GF thinks it was the greatest thing ever to do. For him to design her ring. This cost him just under 10k, same jewler I would use. This is a little over the top for me, but the guy does great work. (http://www.davidgardnersjewelers.com/)

As long as you have some skills for design, it's a nice thing to do. My wife loved that I designed her's. Of course, the stone was given to me from by my grandmother from her engagement ring (my grandfather was a jeweler) so I didn't have that expense to deal with.
My wife designs jewelry professionally. When it came time for the ring, I knew it wouldn't matter what I picked, she would re-design it anyhow. I had a diamond from my grandmothers ring, and I just I picked the simplest setting I could find, and went with it. After we were married one of her first acts was to redesign the engagement ring to match the wedding band she designed.

Word. I've designed several pieces for my wife, including a pair of earrings that she now wears almost every day. I have a pretty good eye for that sort of shit, just no skill to execute it. But if you can describe what you wan to someone who can pull it off, you're golden

Nicole: If it was a nice ring I don't think it would matter where you got it or how much it cost.
Nicole: I think its stupid to spend idiotic amounts of money on stuff like that
Nicole: I think Nick only spent $300-$400 for Stacy's ring
Nicole: I was actually super pissed at [my baby daddy] when I found out how much my ring cost
Nicole: That was money that could have gone towards paying bills and feeding the baby

I really don't see what the problem is. It won't be used in the wedding band. It's a placeholder. And again, the proposal would not be, "would you marry me? Oh and btw this is my mom's old ring."

She has ovaries, of course all she cares about is the ring. The completed trap, the committed ensnarement, my balls in a vice... If I wanted to punt a baby in celebration she'd happily hold it while I aimed if it meant a ring on that finger.
She's probably getting wet right now wondering why. It's sort of like ears burning but much more sinister.

boalg wins. i'm not that much of a jewelry person, and even i am in awe. its so pretty :) it reminds me of my own ring. pretty swirly bits and all
and a comment from earlier in the discussion, if bleepo shelled out $10k on a ring i would have slapped him silly then punted his ass into the future. sorry, but that is far too much money to spend on something like this. (besides, i'm a klutz, i've already had to get my ring reshaped once after getting it hooked on a rack at work)

Is it possible to ask what people here think is a "reasonable" amount to spend on an engagement ring without trying to get people to say what they did or didn't spend? I don't want to play the "how much did you spend/not spend?" game, but I am surprised to see so many people say 10k is too much and I'm wondering what isn't too much? 5k? 3k? 1.5k?

even if someone had a huge salary, i'd say no more than $2k for me at least. yes, i do own a ring worth more, but its an antique that has been passed down for a few generations and to be honest i am terrified of wearing it. what if i break it? what if i lose it? what if someone jumps me cuz it is a pretty large rock on it? i don't know, its just too much pressure.
I'm wondering what isn't too much? 5k? 3k? 1.5k?

Okay, having never bought, but having shopped, I think it's a matter of personal taste and affluency for what you spend. However, I think that DeBeers marketing line about "two month's salary" is a bunch of horseshit! Way too much unless you're dirt poor, and if you're that poor, WTF are you doing throwing it away on a ring!???!
Now, if you're that bloody rich, and don't care, by all means, spend it.
I'd much rather spend that kind of cash on the honeymoon!!!

Okay, really can't say I never bought. About 3 or 4 past lives ago, I bought a sapphire which was to be flanked by 2 rubies on a custom mount. She didn't like diamonds. This was when I still foolishly thought we stood a chance. Now I look at it as a loose sapphire stone that sits in my safe deposit box, for which I foolishly traded my class ring. Silly me.

I think it depends on the size of diamond that the bride wants -- a .5ct is going to cost a heck of a lot less than a 1.5ct of the same quality. And, if the potential bride is after something that's way out of the groom's price range, there's a problem.
Before this turned into a Svi-Smakkin thread, my vote was for this one:
I wasn't aware this was a Svi Smakkin thread.
As far as $ goes, I don't really give a crap how much is spent. I love my diamond because it was handed down from my husband's mother. That is sentimental and special....

$30.
Of course, that is coming from a person who has never been in the position of even considering marriage, much less deciding on what I'm comfortable with spending on a ring. Were I to be in that position, I believe my opinion would change.

My first ring cost $20 a Kmart I got lots of positive comments.... then after we picked out the real ring that cost $2500? My fingers shrunk after the kids and you cant resize the wedding band. The other is platinum and ive not tried to find someone that knows how to resize that around here either.Should have stuck with the kmart ring. I keep asking for another wedding band ( gold over silver will do.) but right now my finger is ring less.
Id honestly pay 10k for a ring if it was vintage or from an artist...id not buy a 10k ring off a factory site.
right now my finger is ring less.

my engagement ring cost about £7 from a summer green fair near my old home. My wedding band was free and from my gran which has been in the family for about 100 years. It was purple, pretty looking not particually well made but hey what do you expect?! Its the sentiment behind the ring and proposal thats important, not the ring. Chances are the fiance will rinse of almost all your cash within the said rest of your life  so no need to get into that in a rush. Time should be taken to make sure its meaningful definitely but personally I dont think you should worry too much about how much money your 'meant' to spend. Just tell her that you can instead use the money to go towards the wedding, honeymoon or an investment into your lives or something. That in itself will speak volumes about the whole thing-cause your showing that your thinking about the most important thing there is; the rest of your life with her. That is VERY attractive to most women. Or at least it should be.

My wife's ring is similar to that. Overall cost was about $300, some 38 years ago. She lost the stone in a softball accident (lost it during a game). I replaced the single stone with another quite a bit larger than the original. My band was bent while wielding a 90-lb jackhammer at a summer job - had to use liquid soap to remove it. Got it fixed, bent again, same spot. It's still around here somewhere. Got some matching wedding bands two years ago, but they started chipping. I don't wear one at all, she still wears the ring.

My jewler will do the work. Currently he is trying to sell me on a simulant touting it as "ethical" and identical to a diamond to the naked eye. I don't mind at all, I just have to find a way to ask B&C about it. I might say "a friend at work just bought his fiancee a simulated diamond and it is great, I can't tell the difference and it is conflict free" and see what she says. If she's cool with it I am cool with it. I have an issue with the whole diamond industry to begin with so it wouldn't hurt my feelings to be able to give them the finger!

I forgot to mention.... We used to work in the yard and pull up poison ivy by hand. Carried it by the armloads to dump (and eventually burn) it. Our body chemistry changed over the years and we are both allergic to poison ivy. And, wifey can no longer wear this white gold ring, as it breaks out her finger, similar to poison ivy. Most likely, the white gold has been simply worn off over the decades. It could be recoated, but, neither of us seem too worried about it.

I am still struggling as to when to do it. Her birthday is a month away, but I hate to do it sooner. I need to drive to Austin and have a sit down with her dad, I know it's a dated thing of the past but I want to sit down with him and ask for his blessing before I propose. Silly I know, but I feel I owe him that courtesy. I mean after as long as we have been together I feel a little silly about asking someone for their blessing, but the old school in me is strong.

Her dad is away lecturing in New England this week and I leave for New Orleans for a week long batchelor party next week. Her dad is then on vacation from July 18th to August 1. Do you think asking for a blessing via telephone is uncool? Email?

Allright, I got a lunch date with her pops on Monday in ATX. I have also decided to do it on Monday (propose) if he takes no issue, because I am leaving for New Orleans for a week and she will be spending a lot of time with the other wives in my group of friends. When she gets hurt about us not being married is mostly when she is with our friends, who, are mostly all married.
So, I will pop the provebial question on Monday if all goes well and she can spend the week I am gone hanging with our friends wives as an official part of the group instead of a sinner. :D I am actually kind of a little nervous about this, and I never get nervous about anything.
She'll probably say no :(
Are you sure you want to propose right before you go on vacation?

I snapped the pics for her, I have lots of Bday and Valentines stuff I take pics of before she gets here. Then, later on, when I am in the dog house I email her the pics at work. Works like a charm!

Yeah baby I know exactly what you're trying to say girl, you're trying to say aw yeah that's it. Then you tell me you want some more, and I'm not surprised. But I am quite sleepy.
btw-- the 5 seconds prior to the two hour mark indicates I was done before we were started. Try to keep up with the sexual inadequacies, gah.

Thanks. She cried when she got the ring, then, her mom and sisters cried later after we went to dinner. It caught her by complete surprise. Plan worked to a T, I feel bad for not doing it sooner now. She is sooooooo happy. She has a smile on her face that you couldn't beat off her with a double edged ax. It feels good to make the person you love that happy, even if it's just for a day or 2.
Thanks everyone for your advice and well wishes, this was a stressful time for me and being able to talk about it here, in relative secrecy, helped tremendously. Both with the planning and execution. Thanks guys and gals.
