I'm looking for something passive, preferably humbucking with high output, balls and growl. Something J-like but with more. So far, the DiMarzio model J's seem to be good candidates.

Well, for my franken jazz, I used Fender MIA pups with very good results. Nice distinct tones outta both pups. So thats my experience. Fender body, ancient hofner j bass copy neck, 500k pots and the above mentioned pups make a nice j bass.

Ultra J's kinda do the vintage Fender, and also nail the modern Super Fender sounds.
Bartolini makes a few humbucking Js as well.
I'm a fan of Kent Armstrongs personally, unfortunately they don't offer a humbucking J pickup that I know of.:(
Oohh..
Aero may have a J-bucker.

They're not 'buckers, but Rio Grande Muy Grandes really have some cojones. I had one in the bridge of my P/J and it had a nice tone to it.

Seems like we've been here before. My vote goes for Duncan Antiquitys - not humbucking, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better Jazz pickup :)

Duncan Basslines sound like theey are right up your alley. They make a Stacked Jazz set that is really nice.
Personally I like the Antiquities or Lindy Fralins on a Jazz better, but they are not high output nor humbucking.
I'm going with the Model J's myself :)

If you follow the link, the Fralins do come in a humbucking version...
