Is the "proper" LH fingering 1-2-4? I've been using the "claw" technique and just using my ring finger to reinforce my pinky so it doesn't have to work quite as hard - What say you?

In lower positions the 1-2-4 fingering provides the best spacing for the half steps that are so large. However when i place my fourth finger down...all 4 fingers are down...
