View Full Version : Ask a MF Supervisor

A local radio station has this thing they do once a week called Ask a. They have someone on the that listeners can call in and ask questions to. Like, ask a fireman, or ask a comedian. I thought it might be cool to try that here once in a while.
So, I'll start things off. I only ask that you guys don't let everyone at HC know my little secret. You'll understand why in a sec. :)
Today's ask a... is:
Ask a MF call center supervisor.
I've worked for MF for over 8 years now. Been a supervisor for 7. Feel free to ask me anything. But keep in mind. I love my job, and would like to keep it. If there is something I can not answer, I won't :) (but if you are nice I might PM you)
To answer the first question, no I can not give you all discounts. Next.

Why, when you guys sent me the wrong instrument, did you all want me to pay to ship it back to you at my expense before you would ship me what I ordered and paid for in the first place? :D

What are a few of the "calls from hell" that sick in your mind? Maybe a ridiculous caller who wanted too much, maybe someone who just didn't understand which way was up and which way was down...
why has things I ordered said in stock, two day later I get an email saying its back oreded?

Man, I could go on for days.
One of my favorites was a guy in a mental institution. He some how get a credit card with with a huge limit, and proceeded t order over $30k worth of guitars in a few weeks. He was convince that he was about to win a million dollars so he would have no problem paying it off down the road. A couple of them were lost by the shipper so he would call to get a trace started. He was convinced the Men in Black (you know from the movie) were steeling his guitars and working with the shipper to "get him".
When I wouldn't just send him new guitars (shipper shows then delivered) he would threaten to send the CIA after us because his missing guitar was a matter of national security! This went on for a few weeks then I didn't hear from him for a while.
Six or eight months latter, I think he was put back on the meds. He realized that he was not getting the million dollars and wanted to return everything because he had $30k of dept that he couldn't pay. He seemed pretty rational until I told him there was no way I was taking back $30k worth of music gear that had been sitting in a mental institution for almost a year. He didn't even know where all of it was, since the Men in black still had some of it.

Good question.
Usually that happens when we only have one or two of that item left. Stock quantities are only updated every 15 minutes on the web. We get so much traffic that if two people try and order the same item a few minutes apart, the web won't know it's out of stock until it's too late.
This won't be problem much longer though.

It was years ago bro. Probably 7 or 8. I'm no longer worried about it. I just stopped spending money with MF after that and went to AMS.
Long story short, I ordered a Mexican Fender Jazz 5 string. when it showed up it was a Dearmond M-75 guitar. I needed the jazz for a recording project. Called, told them what happened (someone obviously just grabbed the wrong box when they were pulling the order off the pick list....it happens) and they told me that I had to send the Dearmond back to them (on my dime), and they would send out the Fender after they got it back.
I told them no way in hell would I even consider doing that as it would not only cost me money, but it inconvenienced me as I needed a 5 string Jazz for the recording project. the manager told me that was their policy and there was nothing he could do about it. They wouldnt' refund me my money until the got the guitar back either.
finally, after jacking them up for an hour, I told them I would pay them $250 for the guitar and keep it (it was a nice little axe) and they could refund the difference on my credit card. Otherwise I would just keep the damn guitar anyway and dispute the charge with my bank. They gave in and that's how it was resolved.
Since then I've spent about $45k with AMS. ;)

Well things have changed a lot in the past 8 years. I really hate hearing things like this. You are a perfect example of what I warn my reps about every day. It only takes one mistake to lose a customer forever.
That said, I hope you guys know that if you ever have a problem I will fix it for you. Just shoot me a PM.

How much gear does MF move a year?
MF and Guitar center are owned by the same company, do they work hand and hand with each other?

Not sure if I can answer all of that, but I'll try.
I think I can get away with telling you that we ship over 10,000 packages a day. I don't think most people realize just how much volume we do.
MF is owned by GC, but we operate independently.

Like product info?
It's a constant battle. We carry so many products that it is impossible for everyone to know about everything, and it gets hard to find enough musicians to fill a call center our size. If you can't get the info you are looking for we have great tech support department you can email. But it can take time to research some questions.

Whats the biggest order you have taken. When a punk kid calls up with daddy's Credit card and want to buy the wrong piece of gear to (like a feedback destroyer) fix a problem, do you try to educate them, or just sell the gear?

As a supervisor I don't tale a lot of calls like this, but when I do I always ask them what they are trying to accomplish with what they are purchasing and make my own recommendations from there. Some people will take your advise, some won't.

I recently ordered an acoustic guitar case that on the MF website said it was made for my specific body of guitar (Yamaha APX series). The case came in yesterday and does not fit. I called CS and they were very nice and apologetic. There is no marking on the case or the box it was shipped in to say what model number, part number, or what it is. They sent me a return shipping label but could not answer my questions about is it worth trying again or can someone verify if I was just sent the wrong case. I am kind of skiddish to try again. Is there any way I can verify ahead of time that I am getting the right case? If not, I guess i would prefer to order it through a local company so I can test it before I take posession of it. Any advice is greatley appreciated. Thanks!

Well send me your order number and I'll see what I can do.
Dave, thanks for your help (and sorry for being part of the comotion on that other site) :-) but I have a shipping label emailed to me from MF and I expect to get the wrong case in the mail tonight or tomorrow and then go from there. Thanks again for your help and advise.

Mr. Dave,
I have tried numerous times, but the email or contact us form on the website will not work. It gives me a username block with no password block and then tells me that my username and password do not work. I login at the order status page, but at the email comments or questions page it tells me my username is invalid.
I returned my $130 case and am trying to find out how long it takes to get refund or replacement. Guess I hav eto go back to the old school way... Pick up phone and call!! :smack: :D

Hey Dave, I purchased a Line 6 Gearbox Silver Bundle DI (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=706520X) last Wednesday. At the time, there was a notice on the page for the silver bundle that it came with a free upgrade to the gold gearbox software, since the gold bundle (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-GearBox-PlugIn-Gold-Bundle?sku=706521) is the same price as the silver at $99 (the notice was on both the S&D and the regular (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-?sku=706520))...
It turns out that MF screwed up in posting the notice and they weren't supposed to mention it until August 4th (which is now the 'available date' for the Silvers)...The upgrade is only going to be valid on silvers purchased after August 4th. At the moment, the upgrade still costs $170 from Line 6...
Should I just return the item and buy the gold? Is there someone I can talk to in order to get an RA# or something, etc.?
Thanks.

It will probably be the least amount of hassle for you to just return it for the Gold. Call the return number on your invoice to set up the return. Then PM me your order number or RA number and I'll make sure everything goes smoothly.

On a side note. I am more than happy to help any of you if you have a problem with an order, but I would prefer if you would just send me a PM. I kind of thought this thread would be more for questions about my job, and the kind of business I am in. Thanks!

How do you go about becoming a GC Call Center Employee?
How do you supervise other call center employees?

Well we're pretty separate, but I'd imagine it would be similar. Just got to go in and apply. :) If you've got what it takes they'd probably hire you.
I just make sure everyone is on task, and making money.

what sort of call statistcs are used to measure the employees (specific numbers are not necessary)? I work in a sales call center and was curious.

Talk time, idle time (time spent off the phone), sales per hour, calls per hour. That kind of thing.
