Hi Folks
Can anybody point me in the direction of some plans for a 14 fret to body
classical with a slightly narrower neck. I'm looking to build myself another
guitar and fancy a nylon strung guitar for playing jazz and bossa nova.
many thanks
Ian

Hi Ben
Thanks for replying to my posting. I'm a regular at Gypsy Jazz Festivals
here in Europe and have played a couple of nylon strung Maccaferri
classicals by several luthiers. Its not really what I want although having
said that I made myself a Petite Bouche Selmer copy a couple of years ago
and still have the moulds that I used to laminate the body in. I've always
felt that the Mac Classical was a little bit of shall we say 'an acquired
taste'
The guitar that does grab my attention is the one was made by Abe Wechter
for John McLaughlin which he named 'Marielle' here's the link
http://www.wechterguitars.com/custom/gallery32.htm
In the absence of any commercially available plans I guess I'll have to
design my own, but I am a little concerned about extending the neck and
relocating the bridge and thought I'd check out if anything was available
out there in internet land. May need some more advice if thats what I do.
Cheers

How would you characterize the tone of the Mac nylon? I've never heard
one. I thought they were 12 fretters?

Hi Thomas
Your right the original Maccaferri classicals were 12 frets to the body.
Although having that deep cutaway makes access to the higher frets a lot
easier than most guitars. Having said that the Maccaferri builder do
experiment a little with scale lengths and number of frets to the body join.
At various times I've seen 14 fret D holes (normally 12) and 12 fret Oval
holed guitars (sometimes called the transitional model) and a 14 fret
classical . The 14 fret classical also had what I can only describe as a
ridge built into the soundboard running from the neck to the tailpiece. This
was characteristic of all this luthiers guitars if my memory serves me
correctly he's a German luthier and has had a guitar stand at Samois (Django
Reinhardt Festival in France) most years.

Sound? I'm no good at describing sounds but I do recall playing the nylon
Mac one afternoon and it seemed just right for playing ragtime on. So that's
what I did. Short and punchy is the only way I can think of describing it.

Cheers
