Huh?

You mean like examining a bass to see if it's any good?

Or do you mean auditions and such in school?

Hi,
I've no idea what happens in your part of the world, but here's a copy
of the exam programme for the Registry of Guitar Tutors over this side
of the Atlantic. It might be of some help?

http://www.registryofguitartutors.com/exams/downloads/BassBooklet2006-insides.pdf

Hope that helps,
Mike E.

Proficiency exams. In some cultures they might be equivalent to
"finals" in standard academic subjects, in other cultures a certain
score might be required for union membership, in yet other cultures a
certain score might be required of admission to conservatory.

I'm still not quite getting it.

In the schools I've gone to, you're graded in roughly 2 separate areas:
academic performance, and instrumental performance.

The first involves tests with specific grading criteria and the like.

The second involves performing a (usually) prescribed piece of music for a
faculty jury.

You can be horrible at one and great at the other, yet still make it
through.

The only time you COULDN'T do this is in specific graduate studies like
theory or instrumental performance.

Outside of that, I've never had to take a written test or juried audition to
get a gig or join a union or teach or anything.

Yep, it sure does - looks to be similar to what we have in Australia
(Australiam Music Board Examination)

Sure. I find out some guys need a bass player. I show up. I plug
in. I get the gig ( or not ). If I get the gig, I pass.

See, that's what I'm not getting. Is this some standardized state exam for
music proficiency? Do you NEED to take this exam before you can teach or
join the union or gig?

Can't say we'd have anything like that here...
