I noticed a friends Engelhardt has a much clearer A string especially
open A, including adjacent notes such as B, Bb, and G and G# on the E
string. He looked down and noticed my tailpiece was visably
vibrating, held it with one hand, and wa la - mine was much clearer.
Anyone have any suggestions of a remedy? My current tailpiece is the
stock maple with the stock hanger.

Thanks for the replies. I checked several things, and it appears to
be the fingerboard overhang. The warble is worse when amplified, so I
made a stiff foam block to wedge between the overhang and the top. It
helped, but didn't eliminate it. The fingerboard is pretty thin, and
maple. Its time for a replacement.
