Hi group,

Once again I find myself picking the brains of the great ones who have
so often helped me with questions in the past.

Full story to give you an idea...

I played a show in Montreal on Tuesday night. We were slotted between
an opening band, and a closer who is currently touring Canada. We were
in the process of taking the stage JUST as the first band had left.
The bass player for the closing act had agreed to let all bass players
use his rig. I just took the cable (which was removed from the
previous player's bass) and plugged it in and turned the head on. The
power light came on, however there was nothing but a low distorted
muffle out of the speakers. After much trial and error, we found the
speaker cabinets to be fine, but the head to be faulty. We used
another head and finished the show.

Last night, we played in Ottawa with the same band (but NEW opener). I
offered to bring my combo out on short notice and let the closer use
it. It's a Yorkville XM200T (200W). The closer's bass player hooked up
his preamp to it and we just DI'd it to the PA. However, the bass
player for the NEW opener noticed that there was no power coming from
my amp. I went up and sure enough, it was dead. I was somewhat upset,
since it's a relatively new amp and I've played about 30 shows on it
without fail.

My guitar player suspects the likely culprit was the pre-amp (closing
act's bass player, who's head died the night before).

I know very little in terms of electronics and tech stuff (I'm
actually a singer, asked to fill in on bass occasionally). But the
power light is off, and I'm getting nothing.

Has this happened to anyone on here? If the bass had overloaded in any
way, could it be something as simple as replacing a fuse? This combo I
believe is solid state (not tube), and I really don't have much money
to invest in repair and have shows coming up.

Your insight and advice is appreciated, and any questions for more
details are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Ken

Well, Ken, if the power light doesn't come on it's usually a fuse or even a
problem with the power cord. It is possible to overload it to the point of
blowing a fuse or having the overload cut in - I don't know what kind of
overload protection this particular combo has - but that isn't really very
likely. Actually, I just looked it up, and there is a fuse which is by far
the most likely culprit. It appears to be located on the circuit board,
which is a pretty stupid place to put it. In any case, there is also an
overload ckt breaker which I don't know where is. I do kinda wonder what
was the point of the preamp though? Where did you run the signal, into the
effects return?
