View Full Version : Comparing 4x10 to 2x12???

Hi, guys.....
I recently bought a G-K 1001RBII, which I love, plus a pair of G-K
4x10 cabs. The tone is very deep and low, and clear and loud. Only
problem is, at near-full volume, the B-string on my bass causes the
cabs to fart, which sounds terrible.
Reality check: I'm prolly never gonna play that loud in real life,
but, I'm not very at ease with the idea that my cabs would fart on me,
at all.
Question: Is it too much to expect those G-K cabs to not fart at
insanely loud volume?
My local salesguy at Guitar Center insists the G-K 2x12 cabs will not
fart under any circumstances, and wants (of course) to sell me a
pair........He says I'll get massive bottom-end for my B-string from
the 2x12's, without the farts.....I'm wondering what the tonal
differences between 2x12's and 4x10's would be.
Can I get some feedback/opinions/reality check/suggestions on this
stuff??
Thanks, guys,
Mark

Hook up the 212 to a head like yours, pick up a five-stringer, then crank
it. Let your ears be the guide. There's nothing inherent about a 10", 12",
15" or 18" that will keep it from farting. The speaker design and materials
along with the cabinet design (especially the cabinet design) will determine
how it sounds.

Usual disclaimers, YMMV, etc., etc. ... 4x10s are often deeper in tone,
where the 2x12s will have a little more midrange bite. I'm right on the
verge of buying a 2x12 myself, if this new project ever gets fully off
the ground...

You said playing at near full volume, could it be possible that it's your
amp doing the farting and not your cabinets? If your bass has fairly hot
pickups or is an active bass, you could very well be overdriving the amp
with the volume control set that high. Some amps don't handle being heavily
overdriven very well. It's also possible that the amp is just putting out
too much power for the 4X10's to handle, and if that is the case, I doubt a
pair of 2X12 cabs would handle it any better. In either case, since you said
you were playing insanely loud, if you really like the sound of the 4X10's,
my advice would be to turn it down a bit and forget about the farts, since
by your own admission, you probably won't ever play that loud in real life.
If you ever did play a gig that required that much volume, you'd be running
through the PA for FOH sound and using the amp only for stage volume.

That makes sense to me......I kinda wish I could a/b the cabs, but the
2x12's are not at the store, yet....
Thanks,

I guess it's possible the amp is doing the farting, but my gut tells
me that's not the case here. I'm thinking those cabs just are being
pushed to far, given the volume level and e.q. settings.
Your point about real-life volume situation is well-taken, for sure.

Mark

Gotta say, those 4x10's are indeed very deep in the lows. I love the
sound of them, except of course, for the farting at insane volume.
But, I just gotta know if it's my fault for turning the volume up so
high, or is it not realistic to expect a rig to play so damn loud,
without farting???

<<He says I'll get massive bottom-end for my B-string from

I highly doubt this.....its a sales pitch. Id go with the 4-10 anyday.
If I use only one of my 4-10s with the Ampeg...I can keep up with a
100 watt, 4-12 Marshall, volume wise. I know.....cause I've done it
(that statement for the detractors only)

Have you still got that EQ and bass boost turned up full?
My gut tells me that's the root of your problems.
It's also possible you've discovered the reason why GK heads are
significantly more popular than their speaker cabinets.
