View Full Version : I got laid off yesterday...

Yep. Got laid off. I work for another week and then I'm done. Not a performance issue or anything - one of the other employees messed up big time and lost our biggest client (70% of our income comes from this client). So... long story short, everyone but about 3 people (company of about 30) got laid off yesterday.

I also interviewed for a position yesterday before I went into work (I had an idea this layoff was coming, so I've been looking). They seemed really enthusiastic about me when I was there and then an hour after I got home they called to check my references. Told them that was cool, and at around 3:30 they called to tell me that I GOT THE JOB.

Not only is this perfect timing, but this job is making MORE THAN DOUBLE what I'm making at my current job, plus 3 weeks paid vacation to start, plus holidays... and better health insurance than I've ever had in my life for cheaper than I've ever had in my life.

So a bad day turned out into an amazing day :)

Got to go fax them the new hire paperwork now... :D

Edit: 3 weeks' vacation? Oy. I seethe with envy...

Haha. It's a good thing.

I've just never been asked to leave a job like this before. It sucks that the company is going under.

But I'm excited to get my new job, doing something more interesting to me and making way more money :) Maybe I can actually afford my apartment now!

Fate has a way of making these things happen. The longest I've been out of work in the last 20 years was 3 weeks, and since I got 2 weeks of severance pay AND had a banked week of paid vacation when I left, it was more like a 3 week paid vacation :D

Congrats Staci, I hope the new job treats you well :)

It really does make things happen, doesn't it?

I just got this apartment, so even though I kind of expected the layoff, I didn't expect it so soon... so I started freaking out. Until I got the phone call from the new job.

And the great thing about the new job is that I'll be doing something that I really enjoy - but until I applied for this position didn't realize that the position really existed.

I'm excited to start!!!

Congrats!!!

Redundancy is one of those things...been there twice in my career......total time out of work - 6 weeks each time - which is OK for a 17 year career!

First time I got 3 months pay ,2nd time I got 6 months pay - and each time I moved on to a higher paid job! I've been lucky so far ,and by the looks of it ,lady luck was shining on you to!!!

All the best in your new job!!!:)

Nice. Getting laid off is one of the worst feelings, because you had no control over it. You show up everyday, work hard, perform to their expectations, and STILL get fired.:D

In related news, my wife got the job she wanted, and they offered her more than she was making before, which was totally unexpected. So we're not going to lose the homestead now.

Yay! Congrats!

I now know what getting laid off feels like.

It's kind of like when you're in a relationship, and suddenly your SO just decides that they don't love you anymore.

"I didn't do anything wrong, but you don't want me anymore? Why not???"
