If you had unlimited funds and unlimited access what basses would you
want?

One of the nicest basses I have had was a Mosrite from the 60's with a
padded back.
I like the original Steinbergers.
Kramer aluminum neck bass.
Original Gibson EB0.
4001.
Fender P Lyte.

Early 60's Jazz.
Anything that was once in the hands of James Jamerson, McCartney,
Sklar, or certain others. I'm an old sentimentalist. (and a "righty",
so the McCartney bass might pose some problems)

I had a neck thru Alembic in the 70's.
My shoulder still hurts.

A "real" game-worn Mike Dirnt P, and an original Steinberger L-series.
Maybe a Gibson EB3 too.

A 60's jazz

Perhaps a vintage BC Rich, Rich Bich

For new basses, an American Made Spector

I would really like to have a 15 string as well, Ken Smith made one I
think.

I've been jonesing for a Status Graphite S-2 for a few years, quilt maple

Alembic makes a lot of lighter basses today. But I like the old Is
and IIs best.

Basses I've never owned that I would buy would include a Jerzy Drozd,
a Marleaux, a Vigier Arpege, and one of the wild old aluminum-necked
Kramers.

Then I'd buy back (or have replicated) all the good basses I've sold
or traded away over the years: a collection of Alembic Series Is, an
Alembic Distillate, a vintage BC Rich Mockingbird, and a natural maple
Pedulla Buzz.

I already have 5 string fretted and fretless Wals that are essentially
my ideal electric bass and a 5 string electric upright that would be
hard to improve on and a bass acoustic guitar that is good enough that I
probably wouldn't want to replace it.

The list of additional instruments is:

8 string (paired course) bass - preferably an old ibanez - or maybe a 10
string.
12 string bass
bass balalaika
upright bass
bass banjo
5 string MIDI Wal bass
4 string musicman (to see if it really is easier to slap on a four
string)
Maybe a 5 string Warwick Infinity.

I'm 56 and my R&R days are probly about to end. I have a '70 Jazz (that I
bought new !) and a Lightwave Music 4 string. (Company's now outta
bidness), and I've never had experience with any of the boutique basses. My
dreams, then, are bas(s)ed on the overall beauty of the bass (to MY eye).
The body shape, the type of wood, the figure in the wood, as well as color,
fit, and finish. Maybe even gewgaws like side LED markers all influence me.
Bas(s)ed on this wordy explanation.... I love the lines of the Sei
Flamboyant Offset particularly in Redwood Burl or Buckeye Burl. The Sukop
is attractive as well, but that Sei......... Oh well, thanks for listening
to me dream! Stipo

I'd have to say that if cash was unlimited, I'd have to take advantage
of that and go top of the line upright!!!!

Of course if you are talking bass guitars I'm not sure. I sort of
already own most of my "dream" basses. Alembic, Modulus, Fender,
Carvin, Ken Smith, etc. Since the Modulus is my main axe, I'd have to
say that any "dream" bass would have to be along those lines. Carbon
neck, Barts, 35" scale, B to die for, and best of all and most
important of all, when you get it in a band it has to cut like a hot
knife through butter.

I will tell this story. Poking through an old issue of the bass buyers
guide,I positively fell in love with the Jerzy Drozd. The LOOK of that
bass is just SO cool! Of course it costs an arm and a leg and is made
in Spain so I figured I'd never even see one. Well, waddya know?
About a year ago I'm at the local guitar show. There is this high-end
bass dealer there and to what do my wondering eyes doth appear but a
real honest to God Jerzy Drozd bass!!!! JUST TOO COOL FOR WORDS. Also
there was this bass dude who played near the Vic Wooten level in the
market for a high-end new bass. And he starts playing them all one by
one. And I swear to you this is absolutely true: A plain old American
Fender simply BLEW that Jerzy out of the water sound-wise! I went
into a depression over it for a month! So I guess the bottom line is
that if you are making a movie, get the Jerzy. IF you want a bass to
play, a plain old Fender can do the job much better for a fraction the
cost!

I could probably buy almost any affordable bass out there.
But I play an Olp.
I love the thing.
Reminds me of an old Fender bass with better sound.
I had a 77 Fender Jazz that I hated.
It was very pretty with maple and inlays but it was loaded with dead
spots.
I have had fretless's and basses with more strings than 4 but I sill
like a 4 string, fretted, passive bass best.
It seems weird, even to me, that I hooked on my Olp.
Maybe someday I'll move up to a Squire. :)

Presuming I'd be keeping my Warwick JD Thumb and my Antoniotsai
5-string:

Fretless Warwick JD Thumb.
Fretless Antoniotsai 5-string.
Sei Flamboyant (might just get used for decoration, I've never played
one so don't know how good that are to actually use).
NS CR5M (I might never use the M bit but it's there if I want to play
with it).

A bass that:

- was as light and comfy as a Yamaha rbx
- had the manufacturing quality and ease of playing of early 90's warwicks,
and looked as good
- had the thunder of a heavy-as-hell japanese jazz bass

Yeah, those are the bass features I've really loved in the basses that
I've owned. Still have the jazz bass...

TonyPhiz

Stipo - I'm just a year younger, and I'm hoping I can keep my Blues and
60s R+B days going a while longer, but lugging the gear in and out of
pubs is getting harder, so my dream bass would be something as light as
possible (but still with a full scale length). I've never played a
Parker Fly, but from what I hear they weigh about 7 pounds, which is a
lot lighter than my Fender. The Fender feels a bit like a lead weight
round my neck by the end of an evening's playing... maybe I'll go in
search of a Parker dealer.

Someone mentioned uprights, and if I were to come into some silly money,
maybe I'd give an electric upright a try. Other than that, the only
dream basses which capture my imagination would be older versions than
my current Jazz... 1975 would be fun (blonde finish) or something late
60s perhaps.

I had a Fender P that crippled me - went for a Warwick Infinity.
These little beauts have routed out "tone chambers" in the body (reduction
in weight is a by product) and provided you are fairly tall, they are a
wonderfully balanced and comfortable instrument with an amazing tonal range.
I`ve never tried the SN model ( so I would be interested in other players
verdicts).

This would be in first:
Status - streamline (the new headless from Status)
Paul Lairat - PL-4 (french luthier. http://www.lairat.com/Basseselectriques_detail-article-11-pageno-0.html)
and a Lecompte - VBX-4

But it's just an exemple because i'm more the man of one bass. One main bass but the others for the fun; why not..
