......for my uncle. He went into the hospital on tuesday when he collapsed. They found out his liver was bleeding. Had some kind of a mass on it. they finally got the bleeding stopped but turns out he has primary liver cancer. He's going under the knife on monday. Even if all goes well they told him it's likely it will be back, and with a vengeance withing the next 6 months. they also told him it's about 90% certain that it has metasticezed throughout his body. :(

Doesn't look good at all. My mom and dad are pretty broken up about it. He's my mom's brother and my dad's best friend (that's how he met my mom). He's always been my "favorite" uncle. Awesome guy with a kick ass sense of humor. Lots of fun to be around. Always causing trouble.

Looks like I may be making a Boston trip by the end of the year.

Actually, the surgery went really well. He's been taking good care of himself so he came through that part with flying colors.

Now for the rough part. They tentatively gave him ~ 1 year, but we'll see.

Well, the verdict is in. Wanted to churn this over in my head for a week or so before posting anything about it. He got through the surgery just fine and is feeling a lot better (minus 1/2 a liver though).

He has some rare type of liver cancer. Same thing Walter Payton had by the sound of it. Fucking sucks. They gave him 12-18 months. Hopefully they are wrong and it's much longer. No chemo or radiation as they don't help. They're going to put him through some clinical trials and experimental treatments at a really good cancer research place out in Mass, so we'll see.

When my my former father-in-law was diagnosed with liver cancer, they gave him a year.

He took 5... and was in pretty good shape right up until the last month or so. If your uncle has a good attitude, he might just surprise everyone.

Well, he's been a health nut fror a long time. He's 71 but still hits the gym 3 times a week and runs 3 times a week, so I'm sure that will serve him well. His attitude is great so that will help too. Now he just needs some luck. Whenever they give you a "time frame" it's just a guess anyway. I had a cousin that they swore would never make it to 18 and made it into her early 30's, so who knows?

Thanks man. I'm cool with it. I'm more worried about my parents as they have not lost any siblings yet, so this is pretty tough on them. I'll get out to see him this fall either way.

DAmn. Hard to believe it's been almost a year since I posted this.

Got news yesterday. He's off all the experimental medicines. They have exhausted all options.

3 weeks to 3 months is what they are realistically predicting.

Really glad I got to see him over Christmas. Looks like it's gonna be his last one. :(

don't take this the wrong way, but...

thoughts and prayers for a smooth and easy end.

i would rather see someone go quickly and not suffer, than to watch them deteriorate over a period of weeks/months/years to eventually become a mere shell of themselves, without the person inside that you knew and loved.

and thoughts/prayers/mojo for the rest of the family for the strength to get through it.

My condolences.

My mom discovered that she had colon cancer, but it metasticized (sp?) into her liver. She went to M.D. Anderson's in Houston, was fitted with a port that went directily into the liver and was treated that way. She was given eight months to live...nearly six years ago. So far she is doing great, but I have other friends whose parents have died of liver cancer since then.

Sounds as if he had a great life, with lots of people who care about him. And, it is not over yet.
