View Full Version : Dolphin set-neck vs. neck-thru & thumb & BTB

Any opinions on warwick dolphin set-neck vs. neck thru? I'm thinking
of getting one. The set neck seems more unique...it has resonant
chambers in the afzelia wood. the neck thru looks darker and cooler
and i don't mind heavy (i play a mahog/maple BTB usually) as long as
it balances... on the other hand ovangkol looks like the thumb so
again the set-neck seems more unique. i've heard that the neck-thru
gives better results for slapping (and popping? both or just one?) as
well as the obvious (more sustain, resonance).

also i'm looking at thumb's, i'm interested in the wide neck bolt-on
(again my usual bass is BTB so i prefer the spacing), is this gonna be
too neck-heavy to be reasonable? i've got a wide leather strap and it
couldn't handle the thumb neck-thru. it hurts my hand to hold it up
all the time and i can't play properly so this is a big dealbreaker.
i don't know if i'll be able to find a wide neck to test out in a
store...

and while i'm at it does anyone know if any 2000-present 1005-type BTB
models are (i) made in fujigen, japan, (ii) have bartolini pickups,
and (iii) are dark in colour (oil finish brown tiger-strip maple w/
dark brown mahogany sides, or even a simpler weathered brown). i have
a 1999 that has the DFR pickups. i want some bartolinis in a 2nd bass
but i don't like the natural maple color, i don't find it attractive
actually.

thanks for your thoughts, it will shape my buying.

My friend is selling a red BTB 4 (ick), that has bart p/u and eq, so yes,
they exist (in red)((ick)).

Some of the bolt on thumbs in afzela are fairly light, and not as neck divy
as the old wenge neck-thru(s). Played a wide 5 a few years back that was
nice, however, I cann't get over the tendonitis issues I got as a result of
my NT Thumb, and you know what they say about being once bit.

The Dolphins are shaped to balance really well, though I've never held one,
from my own experience, I'd bet they do. Much more safer bet IMHO. SN or
NT... well... with the NT you get cool dolphin inlays. My ex-lover dug
dolphins, so I'd pass on that option :-))

I don't understand, do they not offer the dolph in a wide option?!?!?!?
That seems to be what you want. Though, the bolt on might be nicer for
slap. Less percieved sustain in most cases, though possibly negligable
given the amount of variables.

Yeah only some warwick bolt-ons can have the wide-spacing. Maybe some
day I will check out a thumb wide-neck 5, but at this point I would
really
prefer a dolphin (lament!).

To update--the dolphin SN is really great, it balances nice unlike the
thumb,
the color is quite attractive, the range of tones is great.
Especially
the pull-out switch for the JJ, gives an amazing tone I haven't heard
anywhere
else. But the "resonant chambers" are really overrated... they don't
add
much to the sound or resonance as far as I can hear/feel, I don't like
how the
bass feels light in the horns actually, the bass feels much less
impressive than
an ibanez japan BTB. probably the neck-thru bought used,
which is even more attractive, would probably be a better deal...
anyway I
will probably play this one for 20+ years and by the end it should
sound even better ;).

I am looking forward to putting some newer strings on the baby,
unfort.
it only takes the tapered Bs, mostly that means warwick brand (any
recommendations?
d'addarios are not tapered as I have seen) so we'll have to wait for
the most recent
musician's friend order

You could take a dremel tool or something like that and widen the notch
a little.
