View Full Version : AC/DC crunch through a bass amp?

Hi!
I've got my old G&L Invader g#!t@r here and no distorted amplification. I'm thinking I might keep it around to fiddle with some metally kinds of things. So far it makes really nice clean sounds through my bass rig.
Is there a stompbox or something I can add to my bass rig to give it a classic Marshall stack kind of AC/DC crunch? I may also learn some Alice in Chains or possibly RATM kinds of stuff too.
Thanks,
P

I'm starting to think I need an overdrive pedal not distortion. What about a Boss OD-3?

The Boss Blues Driver is a pretty good one.

The original distortion was no more than asking a low powered amp to do more than it was designed for.
In other words, crank it up. Neighbors be damned!

I could see a plexidrive in my future.

The tones I get from my Korg 105od "Classic Overdrive" and Korg 104DS "Hyper Distortion" are pretty good. The latter has a cabinet resonator effect which gives that big geetar stack "oomph" through my bass amp. Perfect for metal. My little 4x8" sounds like a 8x12" full stack!! Just a distortion or overdrive pedal may not be enough.

I ordered and got the plexidrive. It's like a Marshall in a tiny box. Works pretty much as advertised.
Not sure about running distorion through bass cabs anymore though. So I got a guitar amp and will be adding a 112 cab later.

I'm currently running a Danelectro Daddy-O overdrive into my GK 400 and GB 112" cab with tweeter off. Sounds nice, deep and throaty, just like I like it.
My only problem now is if I buy a real guitar rig if I'm going to like it as much as my ad-hoc setup right now.

Yeah I'm in sort of the same boat. If my fears of blowing tweeters are unfounded, I'd have been perfectly happy with the Plexidrive in my bass rig.

Man.... That third sample through the Vox is pure AC/DC.
I like that a lot. Congrats on a great purchase!

I just learned the first few lines of 'The Jack' last night. The sound was so close through the Tiny Terror that I got chills.
I didn't notice much difference in sound between my Plexidrive (http://www.indyguitarist.com/plexidrive.htm) and my Tiny Terror. The Plexidrive seems just as good if you already have a guitar amp to play through.
So now I've got two perfectly good ways to get a Marshall stack without selling the farm.

Now if you want to sound like a Fender, Boss has a couple of pedals for that ;)
